If you are turning 65 you may enroll in a Medicare plan up to 3 months before you turn 65 through the 3 months after you turn 65.


If you worked past 65, had Employer Group Coverage and are retiring, you have 60 days from your last day of Employer Group Coverage to apply for your Medicare and choose a Medicare Advantage, Medigap or Prescription Drug plan.


If you are permanently disabled, have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or ALS you may be able to get Medicare earlier.

Usually plan membership is for the calendar year but, occasionally a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) exists for Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plan members to enroll or disenroll.  The new plan starts the first of the next month.


Most people will only be able to change during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP).  This is from October 15 to December 7Plans changes made during this time go into effect January 1.
